Providence school board nominates interim superintendent

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The beleaguered Providence Public Schools have a new interim superintendent who previously held the post 15 years ago.

The School Board on Tuesday nominated Frances Gallo, who is expected to start before Sept. 1. She previously was superintendent in Central Falls for eight years until her retirement in 2015.

The Providence Journal reports Gallo was once the most admired school leaders in the state and even earned praise from President Obama and his U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

Gallo says she accepted the position because she “left unfinished business” in Providence.

She will be starting during a difficult time after a devastating report came out last month that concluded the city’s school system was broken.

She says she hopes to be a “listening ear.”
